Ferguson grabs first goal, Spartans down men's soccer in overtime

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Mark Ferguson gave the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team an early lead but St. Thomas Aquinas rallied to down the Hawks 2-1 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Field.

Ferguson scored his first-career goal for Saint Anselm (3-8-1) inside the first five minutes. However, St. Thomas Aquinas (8-2-3) tied the game midway through the first half and got a goal from Chris Estevez 2:10 into the first overtime session to seal the win.

After just 4:56, Ferguson opened the scoring off an assist from Brett Rutyna to give the Hawks an early advantage. Ferguson's goal and Rutyna's assist were the first collegiate points for both players.

The Spartans benefitted from an own goal in the 27th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Neither team scored over the remainder of regulation, although St. Thomas Aquinas outshot Saint Anselm 17-7.

Estevez scored from Ivan Dam in the 93rd minute on the first shot of overtime to give the Spartans the victory. In his fourth-straight start, Helio Meirelles Neto made a career-high nine saves, including one in the final minute of regulation, for Saint Anselm but took the loss.

After allowing Ferguson's early goal, Cameron Turner made two saves to record the win for St. Thomas Aquinas.

Saint Anselm plays a pair of away games this coming week, beginning with one at New Haven on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m.
