DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team split a pair of five-set matches, falling 22-25, 14-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-12 to Daemen before downing Mercy 25-18, 23-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-12 in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon at Victory Gymnasium.
Daemen 3, Saint Anselm 2 | Box
In the opener, Daemen (14-6) rallied from a two-sets-to-none deficit to take down Saint Anselm (15-4) in five sets. The match was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Sarah Lowery had 12 kills and Madison Sollows added 11 for the Hawks, who hit .185 in the match. Jewel Hays tallied 43 assists and nine digs, while CC Chrisom made a match-high 19 digs.
Ashley and Amber Drzymala each posted double-doubles for Daemen, as Ashley had 20 digs and 10 assists and Amber posted 14 kills and 14 digs. Bailey Dolegowski also had a double-double of 45 assists and 13 digs for the Wildcats.
In the first set, Daemen took a 12-8 lead in the early stages before Saint Anselm rallied late to take the set. The Hawks broke a 20-20 deadlock with three-straight points, including a kill by Sollows and an ace from Katy Teets, and went on to close out the set 25-22.
Saint Anselm raced out to a 7-2 lead in the second set after a 5-0 run on Teets' serve. Midway through the set, the Hawks embarked on another 5-0 run to go up 18-7 behind Chrisom's serve. Saint Anselm hit .375 in the second set, the highest for either team in any set in the match.
Daemen began its rally midway through the third set by stringing together seven-straight points to go up 19-12. The Hawks climbed to with four, 21-17, but could get no closer after cooling off to a .029 attack percentage in the third after hitting over .300 in the first two sets.
The Wildcats started the fourth set strong by taking a 9-3 lead early on. Daemen held at least a four-point advantage the rest of the set as the Drzymalas finished off the set with three kills in a row.
Catherine McCarthy had a pair of kills before the side switch in the fifth to help the Hawks take an 8-6 lead. However, the Wildcats rallied to claim the win by a 15-12 margin in the decisive fifth set.

In Saint Anselm's third five-set match in two days and its fifth in a row, McCarthy posted her first-collegiate double-double of 17 kills and 12 digs as the Hawks rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit to top Mercy (2-11).
In addition to McCarthy's double-double, Julia Keeler had a career-high 13 kills and hit .400, while Williams notched eight kills with a .583 attack percentage. Riley Grussing contributed 30 assists and 10 digs, CC Chrisom made 20 digs and Danielle Isbell added 14 digs.
Peyton Olson paced the Mavericks with 17 kills, Brooke Runge had 26 assists and 12 digs and Brianna Heffernan made 17 digs.
Saint Anselm started the match by opening up a 10-5 lead after back-to-back kills from Williams and one from McCarthy. Mercy got within two, 13-11, but could get no closer as the Hawks took set one 25-18.
Neither team led by more than two in the second set until the Mavericks went on a 5-0 run to stretch a 14-12 lead to a sizeable 19-12 advantage. Brennah Gladwill had two kills in a 4-0 stretch to help Saint Anselm get within 22-18 but Mercy wrapped up the set 25-23 to even the match at a set apiece.
Mercy doubled up Saint Anselm 10-5 early on in the third but saw its lead shrink to 22-20 late in the set after McCarthy hammered three consecutive kills. However, the Mavericks recovered to win the final three points and close out the set with back-to-back blocks from Leah Petty and Danielle Sarasky.
The Hawks rattled off the first five points as part of an 11-1 start to the fourth set. Saint Anselm led at least nine the rest of the way, hitting .321 with just two errors in the set and holding Mercy to a -.062 clip in a 25-12 set win.
After the Mavericks led 5-3 in the fifth, the Hawks used a Keeler kill and an Isbell ace to take their first lead at 6-5. Saint Anselm then ran off four-straight points to break a 7-7 tie and cause a Mercy timeout. McCarthy had back-to-back kills late in the set before Amanda Bickford closed out the win with one of her seven kills.
Saint Anselm travels to Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 Conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
