MANCHESTER, N.H. – Jack Heintzelman and Emmet O'Callaghan each recorded a goal and an assist as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 4-1 victory over Bentley University on Saturday afternoon at Melucci Field.
Box Score
O'Callaghan scored late in the first half to give Saint Anselm (3-7-1, 2-6-1 NE-10) a lead over Bentley (1-9-2, 1-7-1 NE-10) and Heintzelman, Zach Heckt and JD Hayward all scored in the second 45 minutes for the Hawks. The four-goal display was Saint Anselm's first since Sept. 24, 2011, a string of 85 games.
Neither team managed a shot on goal until the 44th minute when O'Callaghan ran onto a long through ball up the middle from Ken Desmarais, rounded the goalkeeper and finished into a wide-open net to give Saint Anselm the lead at the break. The goal was O'Callaghan's team-high fourth of the season, while Desmarais earned his first point of the season with the assist.
It did not take the Hawks long in the second half to double their lead, as Heintzelman rose highest to nod in Nick Heckt's corner kick in the 48th minute at the back post. It was Heintzelman's first goal of the season and the first collegiate point for the younger Heckt.
In the 59th minute, Saint Anselm added a third as older brother Zach brought down a lofted ball over the top of the Bentley defense from Heintzelman and finished inside the right post for his second of the season.
After the Falcons got one back on a goal by Kevin Williams in the 69th minute, Hayward closed the scoring by poking in a loose ball in the box following a free kick from O'Callaghan from the right wing. Hayward's goal brought him even with Zach Heckt for second on the team with two this season.
Helio Meirelles Neto earned his first win of the season, the second of his career, by making four saves for the Hawks. Harrison Rapant stopped three shots for Bentley but took the loss, before making way for Liam McCarthy, who had one save in the final 25 minutes.
Saint Anselm outshot Bentley in both halves and by an 18-11 margin in the game, while holding a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
On Senior Day, the Hawks honored their five-man senior class consisting of Stephen McLeod, Zach Heckt, Jack Lynch, Ken Desmarais and Eddie Conroy for their efforts over the last four seasons. McLeod played up front for the final few minutes and had a shot on goal.
Saint Anselm plays its second game in as many days on Sunday, Oct. 16 when it heads to St. Thomas Aquinas for a noon kickoff.
