MANCHESTER, N.H. – Kaitlin Hughes won both her matches but the Saint Anselm College women's tennis team fell 6-3 to Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday afternoon at South Tennis Courts.

Hughes won an extremely close match at No. 4 singles for Saint Anselm (7-7, 5-6 NE-10) and won at No. 2 doubles with Jess Perkins after an early retirement by their Southern New Hampshire (10-2, 9-2 NE-10) opponents. Bridget Keefe provided the Hawks' third point with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sophea Sindorf.
After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Hughes came back to outlast Rachel Wagner 6-7 (6), 7-5, 12-10 at No. 4 singles for the freshman's fifth consecutive victory. The win moved Hughes to 10-4 in her freshman season, while classmate Keefe's victory at No. 6 singles was her third in a row.
The No. 1 singles match between Perkins and Abla Chadli was halted at a set apiece due to darkness. The match was then finished on Tuesday, Oct. 18 with Chadli coming away victorious 3-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Hughes and Perkins gave the Hawks an early lead after their opponents retired with the score tied 1-1 due to an injury. The win was the fourth in a row for the pair, who are now 12-1 this season and 10-1 in the NE-10. However, Southern New Hampshire picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a lead into singles.
The Penmen got 6-0, 6-0 victories from Anna Sala and Lindsay Baum at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, while Sofia Morais edged Tess Malerbi 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match.
Saint Anselm returns to the court to finish its fall season against Adelphi at home on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. at South Tennis Courts.
