Men's soccer battles to 0-0 tie with Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie against crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University in a Queen City Cup matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Melucci Field.

Box Score

Saint Anselm (2-7-1, 1-6-1 NE-10) outshot Southern New Hampshire (8-2-1, 5-2-1 NE-10) by a 15-13 margin in the game but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The tie snapped a string of five-straight wins by the Penmen in the series and was the Hawks' first draw of the season.

Helio Meirelles Neto made his second-straight start for Saint Anselm and recorded his first-career shutout by making four saves. The Penmen got five saves from Nick Zucco on the afternoon.

Saint Anselm outshot Southern New Hampshire 9-3 in the opening half and had a few chances to take the lead. In the sixth minute, Jack Heintzelman tested Zucco from 20 yards out but Zucco made a diving stop down and to his left. About 10 minutes later, the Penmen had their best chance of the game but Neto denied Enzo Giuliani from close range.

After the Giuliani chance, the Hawks went the other way as Zach Heckt played in Emmet O'Callaghan with a long through ball, but Zucco came out to deny O'Callaghan. In the 24th minute, Heckt rattled the crossbar with an effort from inside the box as the teams went to the break scoreless.

After the flurry of chances in the first half, Southern New Hampshire held a 10-6 advantage in shots in the second half and the overtime periods. However, Saint Anselm came closest to grabbing the winner when O'Callaghan diverted a cross from the left wing straight at Zucco just 1:10 into the first overtime.

Heintzelman and Heckt each had four shots for the Hawks, while O'Callaghan got all three of his efforts on goal. Giuliani paced the Penmen with four shots.

The game was Saint Anselm's Cancer Awareness game, as the team sold over 400 bracelets and 100 shirts to raise nearly $2,500 in the last week. The money raised will be donated directly to the Jimmy Fund in Angela Kelly's name.

The Hawks travel to St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday, Oct. 16 for a 12 p.m. non-conference game.
