SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Saint Anselm College carried a 1-0 lead late into the third period, but Skidmore College scored four times in the final frame to defeat the Hawks, 4-1, on Friday night in a New England Hockey Conference men's ice hockey game in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The Hawks fall to 8-5-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the NEHC, while the Thoroughbreds improve to 4-11-1 and 4-5-0 in conference games.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening stanza with the Hawks outshooting Skidmore, 7-6, through the first 20 minutes of play.
Saint Anselm finally broke through 3:22 into the second period as Jon Pallotta (Leominster, Mass.) potted his second goal of the season on a well-placed pass through the crease from Mark Meads (Middleton, Mass.). Nick Leonard (Methuen, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the play.
The Hawks held onto their lead for the rest of the second period and for over half of the third period until Skidmore exploded for four tallies over the final 7:15 of the game. Quentin Campbell scored first for the Thoroughbreds 12:45 into the final period, and Marc Cibelli scored the eventual game-winner 1:30 later off feeds from Dennis Maier and Adam Moodie.
Campbell added an insurance goal with his second tally of the game with 3:28 remaining, and Will Golden added an empty-netter for the final score.
Skidmore held a 28-21 advantage in shots for the game. Shane Joyce (Pembroke, Mass.) stopped 24-of-27 shots on the night for the Hawks, while Jack McDonald made 20-of-21 saves for Skidmore in the win.
Saint Anselm returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Castleton for a 4:00 p.m. meeting with the Spartans in NEHC action.
