Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Battles Mercy to 2-2 Draw

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Junior Kendra Bonczar (Milford, N.H.) and freshman Corey Murray (Scituate, Mass.) each scored their first goal of the season and junior Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) recorded a career-high 16 saves as the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw on a sultry Tuesday afternoon at Mercy College.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Bonczar, last season's third-leading scorer on the team, recorded her first goal of the 2015 season coming off two shots-on goal.
• Murray notched her first career goal in a Saint Anselm uniform, putting away her lone on-target attempt.
• Juniors Jillian Beatty (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and Nicole Rust (Hooksett, N.H.) each offered up assists on the respective goals, posting their first points of the season.
• Quattropani bettered her former career high of 13 goals by three Tuesday afternoon, set last year against Assumption College.
• Mercy's Stephanie Escala and Lauren Calderaro each scored a goal for the Mavericks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Beatty played a cross from near midfield to a streaking Bonczar up the left side. Bonczar shook a defender and rocketed a deep crack that beat the Maverick keeper at the 16:41 mark of the opening frame.
• Mercy would eventually surge into the lead later in the half, taking advantage of a pair of failed Saint Anselm clears just two minutes apart. Escala and Calderaro each found themselves with only Quattropani to beat—and both times they did—at the 28:17 and 30:24 mark, respectively.
• After playing equal possession through much of the second half, Murray collected Rust's throughball from the right side and blasted the equalizer into the upper left corner the 65:14 mark.
• With just seconds remaining in the first overtime, senior midfielder Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Mass.) booted a free-kick from just over midfield off the crossbar, but the ball bounced harmlessly away as the score remained tied, 2-2, after 100 minutes.
• Mercy took five shots in the second 10-minute overtime, but couldn't solve Quattropani in net and both teams had to settle for a draw.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Mercy outshot Saint Anselm 29-18 and put 18 shots on target compared to just 10 for the Hawks.
• The Mavericks also earned six corners, all of which Saint Anselm successfully defended. The Hawks earned three corners to their own accord.
• Gillies tallied a team-high six shots for the Hawks.
• Two Mavericks were booked for yellow cards Tuesday afternoon.

NOTES

• Quattropani's performance ranks No. 2 in program history since the turn of the century, second only to Kathryn Mullin's 20-save outing at Pace in 2002.
• The teams maintain their all-time split series history, moving to 1-1-1 overall. All three meetings have been since 2012.
• With on-turf temperatures easily in the triple-digits, referees awarded the teams a heat timeout midway through each of the first two halves.

UP NEXT

• Saint Anselm will open its home and Northeast-10 Conference slate Saturday afternoon, welcoming the Golden Knights of Adelphi University for a 1 p.m. matchup at Melucci Field. The Hawks will then host Southern Connecticut State Wednesday afternoon, as Saint Anselm will host five of its next six games in Manchester.
