Adelphi Holds Off Women's Soccer in Home-Opener, 2-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Adelphi University raced out to a pair of first-half goals and held off the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team 2-0 in the Hawks' home-opener Saturday afternoon at Melucci Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Junior Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) recorded a game-high eight saves for Saint Anselm, coming off Tuesday's 16-save performance at Mercy College.
• Senior Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Mass.) took a team-high five shots, two of which were on-goal attempts.
• Sophomore Alexis Elowitch (Portland, Maine) added four shots and two on-target cracks.
• Adelphi's Morgan Santarro tallied a goal and an assist in the Panthers' victory. Samantha Lanza scored the game-opening goal for Adelphi.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Adelphi's Lanza received a beautiful leave from Santarro through the middle of the Hawks defense and notched an early tally at the 8:42 mark of the first half.
• The Panthers' Olivia Czavar then found some space near the pk spot and dropped a slick ball through traffic to Santarro who beat Quattropani right post.
• Saint Anselm had several scoring opportunities in the opening frame, as Elowitch and senior Callie Millet (Lancaster, Mass.) each couldn't solve Adelphi's goalkeeper Anne Marie Ulliac on a handful of breakaways.
• Quattropani held the deficit at 2-0 with some strong play in the second half, including a stellar save off a deep bending shot from Adelphi's Melissa Duarte in the 81st minute.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• Adelphi outshot the Hawks, 20-11 overall, including an 11-4 advantage in the second half.
• Saint Anselm used a few counter attacks early in the game to earn some one-on-one scoring opportunities, but Ulliac came up with a pair of big saves to preserve the shutout.

NOTES

• Saint Anselm falls to 1-2-1 overall and 0-1 in NE-10 play. Adelphi evens its record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league action.
