Elowitch Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to Cup Consolation Win

EASTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Alexis Elowitch (Portland, Maine) scored a breakaway goal in the 73rd minute to surge the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Stonehill College in the 2015 Catholic Cup Consolation game Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Elowitch, Saint Anselm's leading scorer with four goals and two assists last year, broke through for the first time this season.
• Senior midfielder Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Mass.) recorded the assist on Elowitch's tally.
• Sophomore midfielder Jessica Kaufman (Portsmouth, R.I.) and freshman forward Corey Murray (Scituate, Mass.) each put two shots on target.
• The goalkeeping tandem of junior Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) and Elise Bouchard (Huntingtown, Md.) split halves and each tallied one save on the afternoon.
• Bouchard earned the official decision, picking up her first collegiate victory in net.
• Stonehill's Jamie Block recorded a game-high seven saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After over 162 minutes of scoreless soccer to start the season, Gillies found some space near midfield and played the ball perfectly to a streaking Elowitch, who broke the scoreless drought at the 72:10 mark of the game.
• Quattropani posted a shutout in the first half and Bouchard mirrored that effort in the second as the Hawks secured their first win of the season.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• Saint Anselm dictated much of the game, particularly the first half in which the Hawks outshot Stonehill 9-2. The final shot tally would be 13-6 in favor of Saint Anselm.
• Saint Anselm also earned four corner opportunities in the first half and five for the game, compared to just two for the Skyhawks.

NOTES

• Elowitch and Gillies each earned a spot on the 2015 Catholic Cup All-Tournament Team.
• Saint Anselm has now won 3 straight against Stonehill and is 3-0-2 against the Skyhawks over the past four seasons.
• The pair will meet again on October 10 in a rematch at Skyhawk Field in Northeast-10 Conference play.

UP NEXT

• Saint Anselm will continue with nonconference play early next week, traveling to Marcy College Tuesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. start in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
