WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman forward Emmet O'Callaghan (Weymouth, Mass.) scored his first career goal and junior forward Zachary Heckt (South Windsor, Conn.) added a second-half tally as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team completed a Catholic Cup sweep Saturday afternoon with its second straight 2-1 victory over Stonehill College in the championship game at Assumption's Multi-Sport Stadium.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• O'Callaghan's first collegiate goal came off an expertly placed assist from sophomore midfielder Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.).
• Heckt also tallied his first season goal Saturday in game-winning fashion en route to being named the 2015 Catholic Cup Tournament MVP.
• Junior goalkeeper Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded a game-high six saves for the Hawks.
• Stonehill's Michael Fraioli scored Stonehill's lone goal on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• O'Callaghan opened the scoring Saturday afternoon, taking the Heintzelman cross from just inside midfield to the left top of the box. The freshman then turned and rocketed a shot past the Stonehill keeper into the upper right of the net.
• Stonehill added the equalizer right before the half, as Fraioli redirected a corner entry that trickled across the goal line in the 43rd minute.
• Heckt broke the 1-1 tie at the 51:56 mark with a driven shot from the right side that skipped inside the left post.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• Stonehill dominated the possession game and outshot the Hawks 20-5, including a 7-3 advantage in on-target shot attempts.
• For the second straight game, Saint Anselm has taken advantage of its few on-goal scoring opportunities, scoring twice in three attempts. The Hawks were 2-for-2 in Friday's victory over Assumption.
• The Skyhawks also owned an impressive 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
NOTES
• Joining Heckt on the All-Tournament Team were Heintzelman, junior midfielder Jack Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) and sophomore back Dan Kelly (Braintree, Mass.).
• McLeod improves to 2-0 on the season and is averaging five saves per game and just one goal-against through the Hawks' first two contests.
• Saint Anselm's win snaps a two-game losing streak to Stonehill—the Hawks' last victory interestingly came in the opening round of the 2013 Catholic Cup.
• The two teams will clash again on Friday, Oct. 30 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in the season finale at Melucci Field.
UP NEXT
• Saint Anselm will continue with its nonconference road tour, traveling to Queens College (N.Y.) on Saturday, Sept. 12 for a 1 p.m. start time against the Knights.
