QUEENS, N.Y. – Freshman Emmet O'Callaghan (Weymouth, Mass.) notched both the game-tying and game-winning goals Saturday afternoon as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team posted a gritty come-from-behind victory over non-conference rival Queens College (N.Y.), 3-2.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• O'Callaghan posted his first game-winning goal of the season, upping his season tally to a team-high three goals through three games played.
• Junior Jack Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) improved to 2-for-2 on penalty kicks this year, accounting for both of his goals so far this season.
• Sophomore Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) added his third assist on the season on O'Callaghan's game-winner.
• Sophomore Dan Kelly (Braintree, Mass.) recorded his first point of the year in an unconventional fashion. O'Callaghan's game-tying goal came off Kelly's throw-in deep inside Queens territory.
• Sophomore Helio Meirelles Neto (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) picked up his first career victory in a complete game effort Saturday, recording four saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Queens' Isaiah Kossine opened the game by heading home an early goal in the 11th minute.
• The Knights were whistled for a foul inside the box off a Saint Anselm corner and Lynch put away the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1.
• A last-second shot by Queens shot ricocheted off the crossbar, but bounded away from harm as the teams remained locked at halftime.
• Queens' Paul Sandoval broke the tie with a penalty kick of his own at the 68 minute mark.
• O'Callaghan then received Kelly's throw-in inside the box and tucked it inside the right post for the equalizer just two minutes later.
• O'Callaghan capped off a wild seven-minute span with his second goal, receiving the cross from Heintzelman at the 74:54 mark.
• Neto collected a huge save off a late header by Queens, preserving the Hawks' third straight victory.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• Queens dominated the shot chart, amassing a 22-10 advantage for the game.
• The Knights also earned 11 total corners for the game, including an 8-1 advantage in the first half alone.
• Efficiency in the box was again a major asset for Saint Anselm, as the Hawks put away three of its five on-target chances Saturday afternoon.
NOTES
• Saint Anselm begins its season 3-0 for the first time since 2001—that year the Hawks started 8-0-2 en route to an NE-10 Tournament title and automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
• The Hawks improve to 4-2-1 all-time against Queens.
• Seven yellow cards and 25 common fouls were issued in Saturday's heated non-conference rivalry, doubling last year's three-card game at Melucci Field.
UP NEXT
• Saint Anselm will open Northeast-10 Conference play Tuesday in a rematch against Assumption College. The Hawks knocked off the host Greyhounds 2-1 in the opening round of the Catholic Cup just last weekend.
