Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Midweek Draw with Greyhounds

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Colin Mahoney (Peabody, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season, but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Assumption College Tuesday night in both teams' Northeast-10 Conference opener at Melucci Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Mahoney's first season goal opened the scoring for both teams Tuesday afternoon at the 9:50 mark of the first half.
• Junior Zachary Heckt (South Windsor, Conn.) assisted on Mahoney's tally, his first assist of the season.
• Junior Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded eight saves, mirroring the efforts of Assumption's goalkeeper, Dana King.
• The Hounds' Harrison Eden recorded the game-tying goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Saint Anselm opened play the more tactical squad, possessing the ball for much of the opening frame.
• Heckt found a gap near the penalty kick spot and played a bouncing cross to a streaking Mahoney, who skipped it over a laid out King for the opening score.
• Assumption responded with consistent possession after the break, but Saint Anselm's defense held strong.
• Finally, Eden collected a rebound off a Tyler Castor shot that banged the crossbar, and rocketed it right post past the sprawling McLeod to lock the game at 1-1.
• Saint Anselm had a solid opportunity at the end of the first overtime, as a corner entry from sophomore Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) rattled through traffic to the foot of junior Ken Desmarais (Londonderry, N.H.), who skimmed it just over the crossbar as time expired.
• Assumption found itself with a pair of two-on-two breakaways in the second OT, but both times were flagged for offside as the teams had to settle for a point apiece in the NE-10 standings.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• The evenly-matched teams proved just that, as while Saint Anselm held a slim 18-17 advantage in overall shots, both teams put exactly nine of shots on-goal and took five corner kicks.
• Mahoney led the Hawks with four shots on the afternoon, while King's three attempts off free kicks near midfield were a team-high for Assumption.

NOTES

• Saint Anselm maintains its all-time series lead over the Greyhounds, moving to 35-14-3 with Tuesday's tie.
• Tuesday marked the sixth meeting between Saint Anselm and Assumption over the past three seasons—Saint Anselm is 3-2-1 over that span.

UP NEXT

• Saint Anselm will return to the road for two straight league matchups, battling American International College Saturday in a 5 p.m. start before heading to Saint Michael's College Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. midweek tilt.
