SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A masterful connection from sophomore Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) to Zachary Heckt (South Windsor, Conn.) gave the Hawks an early lead, but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team dropped their fourth straight NE-10 matchup Tuesday afternoon to Le Moyne College, 3-1, on a rainy afternoon at Ted Grant Field in Syracuse.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Heckt tagged his third goal of the season with the game-opener Tuesday afternoon, upping his season tally to a team-best seven points.
• Heintzelman added his team-high fourth assist on the play, ranking third-best in the NE-10 Conference.
• Hawks goalkeeper Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up a game-high six saves, falling to 2-4-1 overall on the year.
• Le Moyne's Fabian Egger scored two goals and Jack Ball added the last tally for the Dolphins. All three goals were assisted by Cal Filtch.
• Dolphins goalkeeper Ben Beaury tallied two saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Off a McLeod goal kick, a bouncing ball found the foot of Heintzelman right on the midfield Dolphin logo. The sophomore then played a beautiful through ball that found a streaking Heckt slipping behind two Le Moyne defenders. Heckt then deposited the ball low and right past Beaury for the game-opening tally at the 27:55 mark of the first half.
• Le Moyne's Egger responded with a bouncing header off a corner in the 59th minute, knocking it in past a laid out McLeod in traffic to tie the game at 1-1.
• Egger then netted his second header goal of the game on a nearly identical set play, finding nothing but the back of the net off a corner from the right side of the field.
• McLeod made a savvy save in the 81st minute, cutting down the angle on a Dolphins breakaway to preserve the one-goal deficit, but yet another set piece off the right corner found a streaking Ball on the back post unmarked who put the Dolphins up 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Le Moyne dominated the possession game for most of the game, holding Saint Anselm to just seven shots on the afternoon and three in the second half. The Dolphins, meanwhile, took 19 shots overall and put nine on target.
• Despite defending for most of the game, Saint Anselm held Le Moyne without a shot on goal in the entire first half.
NOTES
• Saint Anselm falls to 9-12-1 all-time against the Dolphins, losing four straight in the series.
• After winning its first three games of the season, Saint Anselm stretched its winless streak to five straight games following Tuesday's loss.
• All three goals scored Tuesday afternoon came off corner kick attempts.
UP NEXT
• Saint Anselm will continue on its extensive road-heavy start to the season, traveling to Southern Connecticut State for another Northeast-10 Conference matchup. The Hawks will then return to Melucci Field on Wednesday, October 7 for a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup against Nyack College.
