NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Stephen Ochan (Portland, Maine) netted his first collegiate goal and junior Eddie Conroy (Portsmouth, N.H.) added an assist, but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference matchup Saturday afternoon to a very potent Southern Connecticut State squad, 5-1, at Jess Dow Field.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Ochan's first goal of his collegiate career came in his ninth appearance this season, and he becomes the seventh Hawk to tally a goal this season.
• Conroy picked up his second assist of the season Saturday and his first point since an assist in the Catholic Cup Championship game against Stonehill back on Sept. 5.
• Junior goalkeeper Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up a pair of saves on the afternoon, dropping to 2-5-1 in his eight starts this season.
• Louis Greenway Tambini and Christian Samaniego each scored two goals for the Owls and Sabri Akter added another in the SCSU scoring barrage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Southern Connecticut State's Tambini broke through at the 14-minute mark of the opening frame, shaking a defender and scoring near the top of the box. Tambini then promptly made it 2-0 at the 28-minute mark, bouncing a tricky shot past McLeod's left side to surge to a halftime advantage.
• Akter made it 3-0 just three minutes into the second half, netting a header right post off a high cross. Samaniego kept the SCSU offense rolling with another great set piece, booting a free kick through the wall that tucked into the far post to take a commanding 4-0 lead.
• Ochan then responded with a quick attack of his own, heading his own tally in front of an unexpected keeper at the 62:49 mark—less than a minute after SCSU's fourth score.
• Samaniego then added his second tally in the 85th minute in insurance fashion to seal the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Saint Anselm was held to just two total shots on the afternoon, only Ochan's counting as an on-goal attempt. Southern Connecticut State took 16 total shots, seven of which reached target.
• The Owls dominated the corner kick numbers as well, taking nine total and holding Saint Anselm to just four.
NOTES
• Saint Anselm falls to 3-13-2 all-time against Southern Connecticut State.
• The Hawks remain winless in their last six outings, posting a 0-5-1 record since a 3-2 victory at Queens College back on Sept. 12.
UP NEXT
• Saint Anslem will step out of Northeast-10 Conference play for a Wednesday matchup against Nyack College at 3 p.m. at Melucci Field. After spending much of its early-season slate on the road, Saint Anselm will finish off its 2015 campaign hosting five of its final eight contests.
