MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Ian Theriault (Merrimack, N.H.) and junior Jack Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) each scored in the first half to put Saint Anselm College up 2-1 at the break, but a three-goal barrage in the second frame by visiting Nyack College surged the Warriors to a 4-2 non-conference victory Wednesday at Melucci Field and handed Saint Anselm its sixth straight loss.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Theriault's score marked his first points of the year, coming off an assist from Zachary Heckt (South Windsor, Conn.). Theriault became the eighth different Hawk to net a goal, while Heckt's second assist of the season improved him to a team-high eight points.
• Lynch netted his first goal since the third game of the season, upping his goal tally to six. His score was assisted by sophomore Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.), who recorded his team-high fifth dish on the year.
• Sophomore Helio Meirelles Neto (Rio Preto, Brazil) started his second game of the year and accrued a career- and game-high eight saves.
• Nyack's Simon Kraemer scored twice for the visiting squad, including the game-tying strike in the second half. Pablo Montes and Francois Legoedec—who also added his ninth assist on the year—each also added goals for the Warriors.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Anselm opened the game playing excellent tactical soccer, dicing through the Nyack defense with quick touches. Heckt shook a pair of defenders near the center of the box and found a streaking Theriault on the left flank who booted the game-opening score into the upper left corner at the 13:47 mark.
• Kraemer then found a dribbling clear off a free kick and blasted it from the left side into the right corner to tie the game at the 25-minute mark.
• Just over two minutes later, Heintzelman worked his defender deep into the offensive zone and dropped a magisterial cross to an unmarked Lynch, who rocketed home the Hawks' second score of the afternoon.
• It was definitely a tale of two halves, however, as Nyack controlled much of the entirety of the second session. Kraemer once again found and connected on a dangerous bouncing ball in the box and tied the game just past the 62-minute mark.
• Nyack then took the lead for good with a pair of nearly identical scores by Montes and Legoedec in which Saint Anselm failed to clear the ball out of the defensive zone. Both Hawk attempts bounced just a few yards outside the box, almost straight-on, and both times the Nyack attacker beat Neto top-shelf.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Nyack dominated the shot attempt statistics, outshooting the Hawks 18-6 for the game and 12-2 in the second half alone.
• The Warriors also collected five corners to Saint Anselm's three.
NOTES
• Nyack breaks the tie in the all-time series, improving to 2-1 since the teams last played in 2005.
• Saint Anselm dropped its sixth straight game after starting the season 3-0—all of which were non-conference matchups.
UP NEXT
• Saint Anselm will look to get back on track in Northeast-10 Conference action with two straight Granite State matchups, starting with Saturday's tussle with Franklin Pierce University. The Hawks and Ravens will kick off at 3 p.m. at Melucci Field.
