Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Heintzelman Nets First Season Goal; Men's Soccer Falls, 3-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season on a perfectly placed free kick, but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Melucci Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Hintzelman, who entered the contest with a team-high three assists on the year, netted his first goal of the season to up his season point tally to five.
• Junior goalkeeper Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded five saves on the afternoon, dropping to 2-3-1 overall in six starts.
• Romaine Williamson led Saint Rose with two goals on the afternoon and Nick Menozzi added his first of the season in the Golden Knights' victory.
• Saint Rose goalkeeper Colan Balkwell matched McLeod with five saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Saint Rose's Marco Pavlin sent a bouncing cross into the box that skipped over McLeod onto the waiting foot of Williamson, who opened the scoring in the 25th minute.
• Just five minutes into the second half, Heintzelman bent a perfectly placed direct free kick from deep right into the upper left corner to tie the game at 1-1.
• McLeod recorded a huge save on a Williamson penalty kick early in the second half, sprawling left and punching away a low rocket from the Golden Knights' leading scorer.
• The persistence of Menozzi paid off in the 61st minute, cleaning up after a pair of stellar McLeod saves. The Saint Anselm goalkeeper punched away a shot by Saint Rose's Nathan Brown and halted Menozzi's first attempt, but the ball jostled loose and Menozzi netted the would-be game-winner.
• Williamson added an insurance goal—his sixth of the season—on a late breakaway.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• Saint Anselm held a 6-3 lead in shots after the first half, but the Golden Knights doubled-up the Hawks in the second half, 12-6.
• Saint Rose tallied two corner kicks to just one for Saint Anselm.

NOTES

• Saturday marked Saint Anselm's third-ever loss to Saint Rose in the all-time series, dropping to 15-3 against the Golden Knights since the teams' first meeting in 1996.
• Saint Rose has also won two of the last three meetings and two straight at Melucci Field.
• Two senior Hawks got their first starts of the season Saturday afternoon in Ian Theriault (Merrimack, N.H.) and AJ MacDougall (Newburyport, Mass.).  The pair combined for three shots and one of the Hawks' six on-goal attempts.

UP NEXT

• Saint Anselm will take back to the road this week, traveling to Le Moyne for a challenging Tuesday trip before visiting Southern Connecticut State Saturday afternoon. The Hawks' next home game will be out of conference, hosting Nyack College on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
