WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Mass.) scored a late goal and junior Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) recorded a game-high six saves, but the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team was held off by Assumption College Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown at Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, 2-1.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Gillies scored her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute, bringing her season point total to three.
• Freshman Corey Murray (Scituate, Mass.) assisted on Gillies' tally, her first assist of the year.
• Quattropani's six saves were the third-most of the season, but the junior fell to 1-3-1 overall this year.
• Assumption's Paige Radomski scored her second goal of the season in the first half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Radomski opened up the scoring in the 35th minute, receiving a Kiana Rocco cross to the right side and sent it home into the bottom left corner.
• Assumption added a second goal in unconventional fashion, coming off a free kick. The Hounds' Katie Bealka took the free shot from just outside the box, finding the foot of Gillies. Though as Gillies tried to boot a clear, the ball hopped and ricocheted into the back of the net to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead.
• Gillies then cut that lead in half with a deep crack from the right side, tucking it into the left post past Assumption goalkeeper Emily Kuzma.
• The Hawks had a handful of shots sail just off target in the final seven minutes, including a big-time Kuzma save in the final 30 seconds to preserve the 'Hounds' victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Assumption held a narrow advantage in shots, 15-11, and shots on-target, 8-6.
• The Greyhounds also doubled-up Saint Anselm on corners, 4-2.
• Kuzma collected five saves for Assumption.
NOTES
• The Hawks fall to 12-16-5 all-time against Assumption.
• Assumption's second goal of the game counts as an "own goal" against Saint Anselm—the first of the season.
• Saint Anselm starts the Northeast-10 Conference season with a 1-2 record for the third time in the past six years.
UP NEXT
• Saint Anselm will host three straight NE-10 opponents at Melucci Field over the next two weeks, beginning with a 3 p.m. matchup against Bentley on Tuesday. The Hawks will then host Le Moyne on Saturday and Saint Michael's the following Wednesday.
