RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 68-50 victory at Felician University on Sunday afternoon in Rutherford, N.J. The Hawks wrap up the semester at 6-3 overall.
Saint Anselm grabbed a season-high 63 rebounds in the win over the Golden Falcons, their most rebounds in a game since corralling 66 rebounds in last season's 91-46 win over Wilmington. Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) grabbed a career-best 17 boards in the victory, while Raquel Johnson (Inglewood, Calif.) had 12 of her own off the bench.
Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H.) led the Hawks with 14 points on the day, including a 4-of-8 showing from beyond the arc. Caitlyn Abela (North Easton, Mass.) joined her in double-figures with 13 points and four rebounds, while Vonleh and Johnson scored eight points apiece. All 10 players who checked into the game for the Hawks registered a field goal in the win.
Saint Anselm and Felician were tied at 13-all with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter before a 10-1 run by the Hawks gave the visitors a 23-14 lead at the end of the period. Glennon knocked down a pair of triples, while Vonleh added a pair of baskets in the run.
Felician fought their way back into the game and trailed only 28-26 after an Eliana Scanlon jumper midway through the second quarter. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the stanza as the Hawks held on to a 36-30 lead headed in the half.
Out of the break, the Golden Falcons clawed to within one at 36-35, and it stayed a two point game a few minutes later as Kameron Stone knocked down a jumper to make it a 41-39 game with 5:22 left in the third quarter. Up by three with 3:05 remaining, the Hawks used a 7-2 run to end the quarter and gain some breathing room with a 52-44 advantage headed into the final period.
Saint Anselm turned up the defense in the final stanza, holding Felician to only six points in the quarter, to pull away for the 68-50 victory.
The Hawks held a 63-37 advantage in rebounding while holding the Golden Falcons to just 26.7% (20-75) shooting on the day. Felician committed only eight turnovers to 16 for Saint Anselm, with both teams scoring nine points off turnovers.
