MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team suffered a 65-40 setback to the University of New Haven on Thursday afternoon at the Stoutenburgh Gymnasium in Manchester, N.H. The Hawks fall to 6-4 on the season, while the Chargers improve to 6-5.
Candace Andrews (Boston, Mass.) led the Hawks with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block. Raquel Johnson (Inglewood, Calif.) added eight points and six rebounds off the bench, while Kaila Duarte (Dorchester, Mass.) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to go with seven points. Ashley Briggs (Scarborough, Maine) scored a career-high six points off the bench in the setback.
New Haven was led by 18 points from Briana Bradford, while Alexandra Kerr scored 16 points to go with four steals. India Dotson posted a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
The Hawks won the rebounding battle 48-37, but committed 27 turnovers to just seven for the Chargers, leading to 26 points off turnovers for the visitors.
After falling behind 10-2 to start the game, the Hawks chipped away and baskets from Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H.) and Andrews cut the deficit to only 12-6 with 3:21 remaining in the first. Another Andrews layup two minutes later made it a 12-8 game, but Bradford scored inside to give the Chargers a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.
New Haven doubled their lead to 12 points in the second quarter, outscoring the Hawks 18-12 in the period to take a 32-20 lead into the half.
Trailing 37-20 early in the third quarter, Saint Anselm started to fight back as Duarte and Andrews each converted layups followed by a Duarte free throw cut the lead to 37-25. The Chargers answered with a 7-2 run to go back on top 44-27, but the Hawks put together another run to make it a 10 point game at 44-34. Raquel Johnson scored at the end of the quarter to make it a 47-36 game headed into the final period.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, the final stanza was all New Haven as the Chargers outscored Saint Anselm 18-4 over the final 10 minutes to hand the Hawks a 65-40 setback.
Saint Anselm will try and get back on track on Saturday when they host Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 1:30 p.m.
