#22 Men's hoop nails 20 threes, cruises to conference win

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The #22-ranked Saint Anselm College men's basketball team cruised to a 101-69 victory over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night at the Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on the campus of Saint Anselm.

The Hawks stay unbeaten in 2015 and improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference games. The Purple Knights drop to 1-4, 0-3 NE-10 with the setback.

Saint Anselm tied the program record for three-pointers made in a game with 20 makes from beyond the arc. The only other time came during the 1993-1994 season when the Hawks buried 20 threes against Quinnipiac on January 25, 1994.

All five starters for Saint Anselm finished in double-figures led by 23 points from current NE-10 Player of the Week Mike McCahey (Clarkstown, N.Y.), who knocked down 5-of-7 threes on the night. NE-10 Rookie of the Week Tim Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) hit five threes of his own en route to 19 points, while Harrison Taggart (Wallingford, Vt.) scored 15 points. Cody Ball (Londonderry, N.H.) and Victor Joshua (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points and 11 points, respectively.

Joshua added a game-high seven assists, while Ball had six of his own. Grant Mackay (North Berwick, Scotland) came off the bench to grab eight rebounds and score eight points.

Saint Michael's Levi Holmes III and Morrell Gaskins led the Purple Knights in scoring with 13 points apiece, while Colin Richey scored 12 of the team's 22 bench points. Gaskins notched a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds, while Matt Bonds also had 10 points and 10 boards.

The Purple Knights led early in the opening half before triples from Ball and Joshua gave Saint Anselm a 9-7 edge. The Hawks eventually led 14-12, and a 9-0 run by the home team extended the lead to 23-12 with 12:36 to play. Saint Michael's would get as close as 29-23, before a 21-9 run to end the half from the Hawks gave the hosts a 50-32 advantage headed into halftime.

Saint Anselm kept up the pressure in the second half, building leads in excess of 34 points to cruise to the 101-69 victory.

The Hawks shot 35-of-64 (54.7%) from the field while connecting on 20-of-38 (52.6%) three pointers in the game. Saint Anselm scored 21 points off 16 turnovers and grabbed 34 rebounds on the night.

The Hawks are off until Sunday afternoon when they host Post University at 1:00 p.m.
