MANCHESTER, N.H. – The #22-ranked Saint Anselm College men's basketball team remained unbeaten this season with an 89-73 victory over Post University on Sunday afternoon at the Stoutenburgh Gymnasium in Manchester, N.H. The Hawks improve to 6-0 overall, while Post drops to 4-3.
Cody Ball (Londonderry, N.H.) knocked down 4-of-7 three-pointers on the way to a career-high 16 points to go with four assists. Senior Mike McCahey (Clarkstown, N.Y.) posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Harrison Taggart (Wallingford, Vt.) and Ryan Hartung (Haverhill, Mass.) each added 14 points apiece. Taggart also tallied seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Tim Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) and Victor Joshua (New Haven, Conn.) also added 12 points each, with Joshua chipping in seven rebounds and four assists.
The game started out as a back-and-forth affair as the two teams traded baskets to open the contest until a Cody Ball triple gave the Hawks a 15-10 lead with 14:21 to play. The Eagles answered back with a 7-0 run to go up by two, but Victor Joshua canned a jumper from the baseline to knot the game at 17-all. Saint Anselm worked on building its lead back up and a three from Mike McCahey gave the Hawks a 31-24 advantage with 6:55 remaining.
Again the Eagles answered as Tamas Okros and Tyler Desrosiers connected on back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to 31-30. A three point play from Guers extended the Hawks lead to 37-32, and a Taggart layup with 2:23 put Saint Anselm on top 41-31. The Eagles would get as close as five at 41-36, but Kyle Green (Woodbury Height, N.J.) scored the final four points of the period to give the hosts a 45-36 lead at the break.
The Hawks came out of the half firing on all cylinders as they opened the half on an 11-2 run to take a 56-38 lead and force an Eagle timeout. Tim Guers connected on a jumper with 11:28 to play to give the Hawks a 68-46 advantage, and two Cody Ball free throws extended the lead to 75-50 a few minutes later.
Ball eventually gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game at 83-56 with two more free throws, but the Eagles mounted a small comeback. Back-to-back baskets by Jah'Sheme Ringgold and David Seymour cut the deficit to 83-60, and following another Ball triple, the Eagles used a 10-0 run to make it an 86-70 game and force a Saint Anselm timeout with 2:15 remaining.
After a stop on defense, Ryan Hartung nailed a deep three to end the run and seal the victory for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm shot over 50% from the field for the second-straight game, connecting on 31-of-61 attempts (50.8%) from the floor. The Hawks won the rebounding battle, 44-38, but committed 10 turnovers.
Saint Anselm returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night as the Hawks travel to Bentley University for a 7:00 p.m. game in Waltham, Mass.
