Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

He's Baaaack! McCahey's 32 Leads Men's Hoop Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 82-59

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Senior Mike McCahey (Clarkstown, N.Y.), in his second game back after a season-ending injury a year ago, dropped a career-high 32 points as the Saint Anselm College men's basketball team handed Saint Thomas Aquinas College an 82-59 defeat Sunday evening at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • McCahey was an efficient 11 of 17 from the floor, including an unconscious 6 of 7 from downtown, and 4 of 6 at the stripe, while pulling down seven rebounds.
  • Freshman Tim Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) netted 15 points (5-10 FG, 2-6 3-FG, 3-4 FT) and stuffed the stat sheet with eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.
  • Senior Victor Joshua (New Haven, Conn.) tallied 11 points (3-5 FG, 5-5 FT), six assists and five rebounds.
  • Junior Harrison Taggart (Wallingford, Vt.) was also in double figures with 10 points (3-9 FG, 2-6 3-FG, 2-2 FT), in addition to pulling down six rebounds, handing out three assists and blocking a trio of shots.

For the foes…

  • Justin Reyes paced the Spartans with 14 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Four points from junior Chris Braley (Newport, Maine) helped Saint Anselm move out to a 6-2 lead early in the contest. The margin was 8-6 when five straight McCahey points triggered an 8-0 rush that expanded the Hawks' lead to 16-6 with 13:35 remaining in the opening half.
  • Saint Thomas Aquinas responded with seven straight points, including three from Reyes, to pull within three, but the Hawks hit back with a 15-4 burst – with nine points from McCahey – to break open a 34-19 advantage at the 1:45 mark. Saint Anselm led, 38-23, at the half.
  • The Spartans used a 7-2 run – capped by a Reyes trey – to open the second half and trim their deficit to 10 just over two minutes in. Saint Anselm continued its trend of answering every Saint Thomas Aquinas run, however, by ripping off a 14-2 blitz – with eight points from McCahey – to seize a 54-32 advantage with 14:41 remaining.
  • Another 7-2 spurt for the Spartns later in the half made it a 16-point game at the five-minute mark, but again the Hawks responded, this time with a 7-2 counter-run that featured five points from Joshua and ran the score to 75-54 with 3:56 left.
  • Saint Anselm closed the game on another 7-2 swing, with McCahey fittingly providing five points during the stretch.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Braley registered eight points (4-8 FG), five rebounds, two assists and a block.
  • Saint Anselm outshot Saint Thomas Aquinas, 48.2 percent (27-56) to 35.6 percent (26-73), including 45.5 percent (10-22) to 14.3 percent (2-14). The Hawks also gained a big advantage at the line, going 18-for-22 (81.8%), while the Spartans made five of their seven freebies.
  • The Hawks won the glass (39-28), while the Spartans owned the paint (40-20). Saint Thomas Aquinas only gave it away 11 times, while Saint Anselm turned it over 17 times.

NOTES

  • McCahey had never produced a 30-point game during his career. The brother of bash's previous career best was the 28 he scored at Adelphi University on Feb. 2, 2013.

UP NEXT

  • The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Nov. 18 (7:30 p.m.) when they play host to crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
