Volleyball Swept by Franklin Pierce in Early-Week Matchup

RINDGE, N.H. – Senior Lauren Oxley (Bristow, Va.) tallied an errorless six kills and sophomore Katy Teets (Dix Hills, N.Y.) added six putaways of her own, but the Saint Anselm volleyball team struggled offensively Tuesday evening, falling to intrastate Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce University, 25-14, 25-16, 25-20, at the FPU Fieldhouse.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Oxley posted her second errorless offensive showing in the past three matches, hitting .333 efficiency over that span. She also picked up a season-high five digs.
• Teets recorded five of her six kills in the third set alone, also adding eight digs and a service ace.
• Freshman Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) dished out 20 assists for Saint Anselm.
• Sophomore Danielle Isbell (Poway, Calif.) led the Hawks with 12 digs.

For the Ravens…

• Madison Klusendorf led Pierce with a match-high eight kills while Hannah Runge dished out a match-high 24 assists and Katie Leidhold picked up a match-high 14 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Franklin Pierce used a four-point run to push out to an 11-6 lead early in the first set, before the Hawks battled back with an Oxley kill and pair of Raven attack errors to close to within two, 14-12. The Ravens promptly responded with a 7-0 run of its own to thwart any Saint Anselm comeback down the stretch, taking set one 25-14.
• Similarly, Saint Anselm's 9-8 deficit was inflated to 14-8 off a series of Raven kills and Hawk errors. The Hawks would never come within seven points the rest of the way, falling 25-16 in set two.
• After falling behind 10-5 early in set three, Teets tallied four kills and freshman Sarah Lowery (Chicago, Ill.) notched a service ace to hand the Hawks a 12-11 lead. Franklin Pierce responded however, using a 7-1 run to take a 19-14 lead before a Lowery kill, Isbell ace and ensuing Raven attack error would pull the Hawks within 19-17. Saint Anselm couldn't muster any late-match magic down the stretch as a Leidhold kill sealed up the sweep for FPU.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• Saint Anselm hit a season-low .009 as a team Tuesday night, recording 24 kills and 23 errors. Franklin Pierce, meanwhile, hit just under .200 with 35 total kills and 15 errors on 103 swings.
• Franklin Pierce outblocked the Hawks, 9-2, and outdug Saint Anselm, 54-48.

NOTES

• Saint Anselm drops to 11-19 all-time against its intrastate rival.
• Franklin Pierce upped its win streak against the Hawks to 10 straight matches—Saint Anselm's last win came in the regular season finale on November 4, 2004.

UP NEXT

• Saint Anselm will take to the road again this Saturday, battling Assumption College in an important Northeast-10 Conference matchup for a noontime start. The Hawks will then return home the following Tuesday, November 3, to host Merrimack at 7 p.m. in Stoutenburgh Gym.
