Women's Soccer Battles to a 1-1 Draw at American International

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Opportunity knocked on several occasions, yet the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team salvaged a 1-1 draw Saturday evening at American International College's Abdow Field.

Two would-be game-winners for Saint Anselm (2-1-1, 1-1-1 Northeast-10 Conference) bounced off the framework as the Hawks late offensive flurry came up short of snatching a victory away from the host Yellowjackets.

Both teams played to a scoreless draw through the first half, though American International (0-4-1, 0-2-1 NE-10) was more so the instigator on offense. The 'Jackets outshot Saint Anselm 4-2 in on-goal attempts as the Hawks' sophomore goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) pitched a first-half shutout.

AIC would take control early in the half, however, scoring on an unassisted run up the right side to beat Quattropani far post from 20 yards out.

With a greater sense of urgency felt on the Saint Anselm sideline, the Hawks put pressure on the American International backs with a smattering of corner kicks and shots outside the box.

With the game winding down on the Hawks' chances, junior midfielder Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Mass.) earned a free kick from 30 yards out and cracked one off the far post. Freshman forward Alexis Elowitch (Portland, Maine) stayed with the play, footed the ball off the carom and scored the equalizer in the 85th minute.

The Hawks were able to thwart any other attempts, blocking a pair of shots down the stretch to force overtime.

Momentum clearly on its side, Saint Anselm forced the issue in the overtime periods. Gillies knocked her second shot of the night off the post in the 92nd minute and Elowitch pelted the crossbar seconds before the end of the second extra session, but the ball refused to find the net as the Hawks had to settle for a one-point draw.

Quattropani registered a season-high 10 saves Saturday, and Elowitch's goal was her third in the Hawks' four games this season.

Saint Anselm will be back on the road Wednesday, playing Roberts Wesleyan University in Albany, N.Y., before returning to NE-10 play hosting Pace Saturday morning.
