BALLSTON, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm women's soccer team clearly likes to make things dramatic.
Playing its third straight overtime matchup Wednesday evening at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School, the Hawks got yet another late score—this time in the 97th minute—to notch a 1-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan University.
Also, for the second straight game, it was the foot of Alexis Elowitch (Portland, Maine) who scored the final tally of the game—her fourth goal of the season. Also, for the second time this season, it was a great play by junior Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Mass.) to put the ball right where Elowitch needed it, collecting forward on the right flank, 20-yards out.
Both Saint Anselm goalkeepers saw action Wednesday, with Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) picking up her third win of the season. Quattropani, playing in the second half and the overtime period, picked up five saves while senior Gabrielle Primera (Kennett Square, Pa.) recorded one first-half stop.
Saint Anselm (3-1-1) dictated play through much of the first half, outshooting the Redhawks 10-2 in the opening frame. Roberts Wesleyan (3-4) would push back near the end of the second half, putting three shots on goal to the Hawks' five.
The game was played at the alma mater of sophomore forward Jillian Beatty (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), who tallied one shot in the first half.
Saint Anselm will return to Northeast-10 Conference play Saturday, hosting Pace University at Melucci Field in an 11 a.m. matchup. The women's soccer game will also kick off Saturday's Homecoming celebration on campus.
