GORHAM, Maine –Junior Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) senior Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn.) each notched three points to lead the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine on Friday evening at the USM Ice Arena in ECAC Men's East ice hockey action.
With the win, Saint Anselm takes its fourth straight contest and jumps to 10-9-4 overall and 6-7-4 in the conference, while the Huskies descend to 5-14-5, 4-11-2 ECAC East.
Southern Maine took both teams into the first break with a 1-0 lead, despite the Hawks holding a 10-8 shot advantage. The Huskies found the net as Ryan Seward picked up a Saint Anselm turnover and passed the puck to Kelby Lorenz, before he beat Saint Anselm senior goaltender Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) at 12:13.
The Hawks began a three-goal rally in the second, with goals from Daniels, sophomore Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) and senior Eric Czapka (Holland, Pa.), giving them the 3-1 lead after two.
Daniels leveled the score, 1-1, at 6:32 when he netted his own rebound at the right post just seconds after a Saint Anselm power play expired. Tebano and senior Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) were each credited with assists on the play.
Sullivan put the Hawks up 2-1 at 11:02 with a goal of his own as he picked up the puck off a Tebano blocked shot and shoved it just across the goal line. It was Czapka's turn exactly five minutes later when Sullivan picked up a Husky turnover at the blue line and got the puck to Czapka, before he rifled a wrist shot that found its way past Southern Maine goaltender Dylan Wells.
Each team tacked on one more goal each in the final period, bringing the game to its final score of 4-2. Daniels put Saint Anselm up 4-1 at 7:08 when he went top shelf on Wells with a shot from low in the right circle. Tebano tallied his third assist on the play, while senior Kevin Vanous (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up his first point of the night on the power-play goal.
The Huskies scored the final goal of the contest at 12:42 when Todd Bannerman potted his seventh goal of the season to end scoring at 4-2.
Dries made 29 stops to earn the win, while Wells made 25 saves. Southern Maine ended up with a 31-29 edge in shots on goal.
