BIDDEFORD, Maine – Four different Hawks scored a goal and senior goaltender Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) posted 32 stops, but a University of New England goal with 59 seconds remaining in overtime, proved to be the deciding factor as the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team fell to the University of New England, 5-4, in both teams' ECAC East regular-season finale played Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.
With the defeat, the Hawks saw a four-game win streak come to an end, as they drop to 10-10-4 overall and conclude ECAC East play with a 6-8-4 ledger. The Nor'easters will wrap up the regular season at 10-14-1, 7-11-0 ECAC East.
Saint Anselm rallied back from a pair of two-goal deficits in the second period to tie the game at 4-all. First, trailing 2-0 after the first frame, the Hawks came out of the locker room with urgency to start the second, getting goals from senior Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) to even the score, 2-2, in the opening 8:26 of the second.
The Nor'easters would not sit quietly, however, as Jared Melman notched back-to-back goals to help UNE regain their momentum. His first goal came at 10:07, followed by a second at 15:19 to once again give UNE a two-goal cushion at 4-2.
Junior Joey Agliato (Hauppage, N.Y.) tallied a goal for Saint Anselm just 24 seconds after Melman's third goal of the afternoon, then senior Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) converted a power-play opportunity at the 17:52 mark to tie the game at four.
Neither team had quality scoring chances in the third, forcing the contest into overtime.
After a scoreless extra frame, it appeared as if the contest would end in a deadlock until Melman struck with 59 seconds left in the fourth stanza.
Colby Drost had 26 saves for the Nor'easters, who led 37-30 in shots on goal.
The Hawks conclude their regular season Tuesday when they head to Stonehill College for a 7 p.m. game.
