Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Upended by Queens, 2-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – A pair of late goals proved the difference Tuesday night as the Saint Anselm men's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Queens College at Melucci Field. Queens (2-6 overall) notched the equalizer in the 88th minute then put away the game-winner in the 107th minute of the second overtime to steal the non-conference road win.

While neither team took control in the first half, Queens had the first real scoring opportunity following a foul just outside the box, as the Knights blasted one off the right post in the 18th minute.

Saint Anselm (3-6) finally cracked the scoring column, as junior Sean Smith (Hampstead, N.H.) took a cross from freshman Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) in the 55th minute to break a scoreless tie.

Yet Smith's second goal of the year wasn't quite enough, as with time dwindling away in the second half, Queens took initiative and finally found the back of the net on a bullet from the top of the box.

In overtime, the Knights continued to pester Saint Anselm goalkeeper Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.), who made seven saves on the day. Finally, a free kick in the waning minutes of the game found the foot of a Knight forward, who ended the game with a dramatic put-away.

Saint Anselm will look to get back on track in Northeast-10 Conference play Saturday, traveling to Assumption for a noontime matinee.
