GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm men's soccer team doubled its NE-10 win total Saturday, picking up an important road victory over Adelphi, 1-0 in overtime.
Saint Anselm (3-5, 2-4 NE-10) was outshot a whopping 25-6 and put just two shots on goal, but the Hawks put away the one shot that counted in the 98th minute to secure their second straight win.
After playing to a scoreless draw through the first two periods, junior Sean Smith (Hampstead, N.H.) dribbled up the left flank and found junior Colin Mahoney (Peabody, Mass.) streaking through the box. Mahoney squared up and one-timed it past the Adelphi goalkeeper to record not only his second career goal, but second consecutive game-winner this season.
Adelphi (5-4, 3-3) sent in five shots on goal, all of which Saint Anselm sophomore goalkeeper Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) stopped. The win Saturday was also the third shutout for McLeod this season.
Saint Anselm will step out of Northeast-10 Conference play Tuesday, hosting Queens College (N.Y.) for a 3:30 p.m. matchup at Melucci Field.
