MANCHESTER, N.H. – Saint Anselm needed a collective team effort to knock off a very potent Saint Rose team Friday night, and that's precisely what it got as the Hawks pulled a major upset of the Golden Knights, 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20 at Stoutenburgh Gym.
A pair of freshmen in middle Amanda Williams (North Andover, Mass.) and Kathryn Teets (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led the offensive output Friday with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Yet it was the defensive efforts—both at the net and in the back row—that proved the key to victory Friday.
Entering the matchup, both Saint Anselm and Saint Rose were tied atop the Northeast-10 Conference in team blocks with a matching 1.83 blocks per set average. And while the Golden Knights managed to win the blocking battle 15-10, the Hawks made up for it with three more service aces and three more digs from the back row.
Sophomore defensive specialist Catherine Morgan (Farmington Hills, Mich.) recorded a team-high 11 digs and spent much of the night sticking serve receptions to jumpstart the Saint Anselm offense. Senior setter Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) also added 10 digs to go with a match-high 39 assists in recording her seventh double-double of the season.
Williams also added a season-high eight blocks in the match while Teets tallied all of her match-high three service aces in the fourth set alone, turning a 2-6 deficit into a 9-6 advantage. Saint Anselm was able to keep the Golden Knights at arm's length for the rest of the set and punctuated an important victory with a service ace and two Teets kills.
Saint Anselm (11-10, 3-6 NE-10) will hope its three-match win streak stays alive as it welcomes Le Moyne (7-10, 4-4 NE-10) to Stoutenburgh Gym Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins, which are directly above Saint Anselm in the league standings, defeated Saint Michael's in straight sets Friday night.
