MANCHESTER, N.H. – Three Saint Anselm hitters tallied double-digit kills, but the Hawks came up short in a Saturday afternoon Northeast-10 matchup against Le Moyne, falling to the Dolphins 25-17, 25-22, 16-25, 25-23 at Stoutenburgh Gym.
The freshman tandem of outside Kathryn Teets (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Amanda Williams (North Andover, Mass.) each tallied a team-high 13 kills Saturday, with sophomore right side Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, Calif.) adding 12 kills and a team-high four service aces.
Senior setter Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) recorded a match-high 42 assists and tallied 13 digs for her second straight and eighth overall double-double of the season. Senior libero Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass.) also added a match-high 18 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist CC Chrisom (Dover, N.H.) added 10 saves.
Both teams hit relatively efficiently, with Le Moyne scoring at a .231 hitting clip and Saint Anselm hitting .210 on the afternoon. The Hawks actually tallied more kills (49-48), digs (57-55), and blocks (7-4) than Le Moyne, but the Dolphins took advantage of late-set opportunities to snag an important league victory.
Williams and Teets each tallied three blocks, while sophomore middle Micaela Donatio (North Andover, Mass.) tallied a match-high four to her credit.
Unlike in Friday's win against Saint Rose, Saint Anselm's serve receive was a bit shaky in the first two sets as it struggled to get into its offense. Le Moyne tallied 11 service aces—the most given up this season by the Hawks.
Le Moyne (8-10, 5-4 NE-10) broke a 15-15 tie in the first set, closing on a 10-2 run, and responded by closing out the second set on a 9-1 run to surge to a 2-0 lead.
Saint Anselm (11-11, 3-7 NE-10) turned the tables in the third set, turning a 14-14 tie into a 25-16 victory on the service of sophomore Catherine Morgan (Farmington Hills, Mich.), Gladwill and Jewett.
A Donatio solo block gave Saint Anselm a 21-20 lead deep in the fourth set, but the Dolphins reeled off three straight points on a pair of Hawk attack errors to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Saturday's match was Saint Anselm's annual Dig Pink game, as the Hawks donned pink uniforms and accessories and sold t-shirts and ribbons to adorn Stoutenburgh Gym in support of breast cancer awareness.
Saint Anselm will return to action next weekend with a pair of matinees, traveling to New Haven for a 1 p.m. matchup before crossing town to play Southern Connecticut State Sunday at noon. The Hawks will conclude its 2014 campaign in two weeks back at Stoutenburgh Gym.
