MANCHESTER, N.H. – Miserable weather for the Saint Anselm's men's soccer game forced a relocation of the game from a soggy Melucci Field to the turf of Grappone Stadium Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, a change in venue wasn't enough for the home team as the Hawks fell to No. 23 Merrimack, 3-0.
As both teams battled the wind, rain and slick turf conditions, Saint Anselm held its own in the midfield especially, holding the Warriors scoreless.
Offensively, the Hawks failed to get off a shot in the first half, and managed just three in the second stanza. Sophomore Zachary Heckt (South Windsor, Conn.) and senior Ronan O'Callaghan (Weymouth, Mass.) each put one shot on goal.
Merrimack, on the other hand, scored just 43 seconds into the second half on a deep shot from outside the left 18 to notch the would-be game-winner. The Warriors added another score on a deflected free kick from the right side, and made it 3-0 on a great play from the left post that beat Saint Anselm sophomore goalkeeper Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) near post.
McLeod recorded four saves in the complete game, falling to 3-6 in the box this year.
Saint Anselm returns to action Saturday, traveling to Albany, N.Y., for a 1 p.m. matchup against Saint Rose. The Hawks will then finish up their 2014 campaign by hosting Bentley Tuesday and American International Friday of next week.
