Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mahoney, Lynch Push Men's Soccer to Win at Saint Rose, 2-1

ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior Colin Mahoney (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Jack Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) notched first-half goals and the Saint Anselm men's soccer team held on to defeat Saint Rose Saturday afternoon in Albany, 2-1.

In a heated matchup in which five yellow cards were distributed between both teams, Saint Anselm struck first on Mahoney's third goal of the season. The junior midfielder took a touch near the midline and scored low right post off an assist by senior Ronan O'Callaghan (Weymouth, Mass.).

Just one minute and 32 seconds later, Lynch tagged his fourth goal of the year off a deflected assist from O'Callaghan to hand the Hawks a commanding two-goal lead.

Saint Rose would answer midway through the second half, but the Hawks held the Golden Knights to just two shots in the second half en route to the big road victory.

Saint Anselm outshot the Golden Knights 16-11 on the day, and put one more shot on-goal.

The pair of assists from O'Callaghan was the first of the season for the senior, who upped his season point total to four after scoring his first goal a week ago against Southern Connecticut State.

Senior goalkeeper Bret Macko (Bolton, Mass.) took his first win in-goal of the season Saturday and recorded five saves in the process.

Mathematically, the win keeps Saint Anselm alive to claim the No. 8 seed in the Northeast-10 Tournament, though the Hawks will need to win its final two games and hope for some help from teams around the league in next week's slate.

Saint Anselm will finish the year with two home games next week, beginning Tuesday against Bentley. The Hawks will conclude its regular season with a matchup against American International Friday. Both games at Melucci Field have been moved to 3 p.m. start times.
