MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Kendra Bonczar (Milford, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal in the third minute of overtime Tuesday evening at Melucci Field as Saint Anselm picked up a huge victory over Southern New Hampshire, 1-0.
As darkness settled in on the Hilltop, Bonczar, who scored her third goal of the season and third in the past five games, took a perfect feed from freshman Jessica Kaufman (Portsmouth, R.I.) from the left wing and beat a defender and the Penmen goalkeeper right post.
Saint Anselm (6-4-3, 4-4-3 NE-10) played much of the game on the offensive, outshooting Southern New Hampshire 18-5 for the game. The Hawks also tallied five corner kicks to the Penmen's one.
Defensively, the Hawk backs were able to squeeze the SNHU forwards further into their own territory, as physical play from junior Kat Leger (Westminster, Mass.) and sophomore Gabrielle Toro (Weymouth, Mass.) kept the Penmen threats to a minimum.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) tallied four relatively easy saves on the night, recording her second shutout of the season.
With the win, Saint Anselm remains in the running for a Northeast-10 Tournament bid after picking up three points in the league race. With only a handful of Tuesday's league schedule complete as of this post, the Hawks remain just points from earning a berth.
The victory was also important in Saint Anselm's quest for the inaugural Queen City Cup—a newly instilled rivalry between the crosstown rivals. Tuesday's result puts the first points on the board for Saint Anselm, which now trails 10-2 overall through six sports played.
The Hawks will look to keep the momentum rolling Saturday afternoon as they host Assumption for a 3 p.m. matchup. The game, which was previously scheduled for a 4 p.m. start, will be moved up an hour to account for potential darkness.
