POTSDAM, N.Y. – Junior Sean Jenkins (Boston, Mass.) scored Saint Anselm's only goal of the game to pull the Hawks within one in the third period, but the men's ice hockey team fell to SUNY Potsdam, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Hall Arena.
With the loss, Saint Anselm will drop to 3-5-2 overall, while the Bears improve their record to 5-7.
Potsdam took advantage of two goals - one in the first period and one in the second - giving the Bears a two-goal lead heading into the third. Mike Arnold and Matt Thompson were each responsible for the Potsdam tallies. Arnold connected with Todd Thomas and Tommy Telesca just 1:32 into the game, before Thompson was set up by Brad Campagna at 13:58 of the middle frame.
Sophomore Mark Meads (Middleton, Mass.) sent a pass to Jenkins late in the third and he beat Potsdam goaltender Shane Talarico with 3:45 left in the game, cutting the deficit to one, but the Hawks were unable to capitalize in the final minutes.
Saint Anselm senior netminder Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) made 21 saves, while Talarico stopped 28 of 29 shots he faced. The Hawks held a 29-23 edge in shots on goal. Neither team struck on the power play as the Hawks were 0-for-8 and the Bears missed all three opportunities.
The Hawks will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Franklin Pierce University.
