WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Shannon Douglas (Rochester, N.H.) led with 10 kills and 11 digs as the Saint Anselm College volleyball team took down Assumption College, 3-1 in the first match of the day. Freshman Catherine Morgan (Farmington Hills, Mich.) took charge in the second match with 10 kills and 11 digs of her own, as the Hawks triumphed over Dominican (N.Y.) College, 3-0, at Laska Gymnasium in the second game.
With the pair of wins, the Hawks jump out to 2-0 on the young season.
In the first game, the Hawks gave up the first set 24-26, before taking the next three straight 25-23, 25-22, 25-18.
Morgan also helped lead the offensive effort in game one with 11 kills, while junior Melissa Ouellet (Salem, N.H.) added seven kills for a .400 hitting percentage. Senior Vivian Fitzgerald (Winfield, Ill.) contributed nine kills, while freshman Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, Calif.) recorded seven kills alongside three digs.
Junior Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) aided in the effort with 43 assists, four kills and nine digs. Junior Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass.) recorded 19 digs as the libero. Senior Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.) brought a pair of kills and seven digs to the table.
In the second game, Saint Anselm jumped out of the gate, winning the match in three sets: 25-22, 25-17, and 25-14. Aside from Morgan, Douglas fueled the offense with nine kills, while Fitzgerald added four.
Jewett recorded 14 digs, while Gustavson and Gladwill each tacked on six apiece. Steinwart, at the setter position again in game two, passed off 24 assists and helped the defense with seven digs.
The Hawks return to the court Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. when they open their home slate against Southern New Hampshire University.
