Volleyball Drops Back-and-Forth Battle with SNHU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Melissa Ouellet (Salem, N.H.) led the Hawk hitters with nine kills, while junior Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.), freshman Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, Calif.) and freshman Catherine Morgan (Farmington Hills, Mich.) each chipped in eight, as the Saint Anselm volleyball team fell to Southern New Hampshire University, 3-2, Tuesday evening as the Hawks opened up their home slate in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Hawks will dip to 2-1 on the young season, while the Penmen improve to 3-1.

The Penmen grabbed the first set, 25-20, but the Hawks fought back to take the next two with scores of 25-22 and 26-24. Southern New Hampshire forced the fifth set after taking the fourth, 25-20. The final set, which resulted in a Penmen victory, ended with a score of 15-7.

With the sets tied 1-1, the Hawks trailed in the third set 23-24, before they rallied to score three straight points finishing the set 26-24. Gladwill initiated the sequence with a kill, giving the Hawks momentum to take the next two points, which included a service ace from Gustavson.

In addition to her eight kills, Gladwill notched five digs, while Morgan added four. Junior Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) accumulated 41 assists, while also contributing offensively with seven kills for a team-high .462 hitting percentage. Steinwart also had six digs on the night.

Gustavson was strong on the other side ball with 17 digs, while junior teammate Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass.) continued 19. Junior Jenny Doder (St. Louis, Mo.) played solid defense with 10 digs. Senior Vivian Fitzgerald (Winfield, Ill.) hammered away seven kills, including three in the third set.

The Hawks return to the court Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel Flushing, N.Y. to take on both Felician (1 p.m.) and Queens (3 p.m.).
