Volleyball Splits With Felician, Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.) posted double figures in kills and digs in both games Saint Anselm played in, as the Hawks took down Felician, 3-1, and dropped a 3-1 decision to Queens (N.Y.) on Saturday afternoon for non-conference action.

The Hawks move to 3-2 on the season, while Felician drops to 0-4 and Queens now improves to a perfect 4-0.

Saint Anselm took the match from Felician in four sets, after battling back from a 1-0 set deficit. Set scores of the first game were 23-25, 25-21, 25-13, and 25-23.

Gustavson took control in the first match with 19 kills alongside 14 digs. Senior Melissa Ouellet (Salem, N.H.) and junior Holland McNabb (Huntington Beach, Calif.) also posted double figures in kills with 11 and 14, respectively. McNabb also contributed defensively with 13 digs. Freshman Micaela Donatio (North Andover, Mass.) posted a career-best eight kills for a team-high .500 hitting percentage.

Junior Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) totaled 43 assists and eight digs, while junior Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass.) posted ten digs.

The Hawks posted ten blocks, with four coming from Donatio.

In the second game of the day, Saint Anselm took the first set, 25-23, but then lost steam and dropped the following three straight, 21-25, 13-25 and 23-25.

Gustavson remained a force with 13 kills and 14 digs, while the Hawks also saw offensive production from freshman Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, Calif.), who chipped in 13 kills of her own.

Ouellet recorded nine kills and a block, while McNabb added seven kills and five digs. Jewett and Jenny Doder (St. Louis, Mo.) held down the defense with 19 and eight digs, respectively.

Steinwart, who accumulated 36 assists over four sets, was also responsible for 12 digs.

The Hawks return to the court Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m. when they travel to Post University on their way home to the Granite State.
