Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Doubled Up by New Haven, 6-3

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Zachary Heckt (South Windsor, Conn.) had a hand in all three of the Hawks' goals, but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell to the University of New Haven, 6-3, Saturday afternoon on Melucci Field for Northeast-10 men's soccer action.

With the loss, Saint Anselm drops to 2-5-0 overall and 1-4-0 in NE-10 conference play, while the Chargers, who were handed their first win of 2013, move to 1-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in league play.

New Haven jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 29th minute as it saw first half goals from JP DiTommaso, Emil Thomsen and Matt Dillon. The Hawks cut the deficit to one, however, with a pair of goals from Heckt to make the score 3-2.

Heckt's first notch came at 42 minutes when he picked up a pass from freshman Matthew Vlasich (Exeter, N.H.) and broke away from the pack to pull out New Haven goalkeeper Jason Smith. With Smith out of the goal, he sent a shot past his right side.

Heckt then brought the Hawks within one as he picked up a loose ball in the Hawks' zone, deked Smith and sent the ball into the net at the left post.

To open scoring in the second, the Chargers potted another three straight, however, pushing the lead to four at 6-2. A pair of goals from Alain Laurent and one from Eric Robertson gave the Chargers their four-goal cushion.

Senior Drew Cooper (Portland, Conn.) earned the final strike for Saint Anselm with his goal at 68 minutes. Heckt sent the ball at the net, before Cooper came running in to finish it off at the left post to end all scoring with a final tally of 6-3.

Freshman Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) and junior Bret Macko (Bolton, Mass.) each gave up three goals, while McLeod made two saves and Macko made three stops. New Haven's Jason Smith and James Pyatsky also split time in net as they each picked up a pair of saves. Despite the loss, Saint Anselm held a 17-12 advantage in shots, including 9-6 in the second half. Corner kicks were even at three apiece.

The Hawks return to the field Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to Saint Michael's College.
