Men's Soccer Comes Up Short in 2-1 Overtime Loss at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Jack Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) staked the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team to an early lead with his first collegiate goal, but Saint Michael's College battled back to earn a 2-1 overtime victory on Wednesday afternoon at Duffy Field.

The Hawks drop their fifth straight to fall to 2-6 on the season, including 1-5 in Northeast-10 play. The Purple Knights even their record at 3-3, 3-1 NE-10.

Lynch gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead late in the ninth minute when his rocket from 30 yards out went upper right corner to find the back of the net.

Saint Michael's gained the equalizer early in the 30th minute as Simon Rodriguez received a pass on the left side of the box, cut to his right and ripped a shot that beat senior goalkeeper Mark Kotsopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) into the right side of the goalmouth.

The two teams fought through a scoreless second half before the Purple Knights won it just 28 seconds into the extra session. Anthony Stanley chipped a long pass over the defense before Aaron DaCosta ran it down and lofted a shot over an outstretched Kotsopoulos and just inside the right post.

Kostopoulos stopped four shots, while Saint Michael's goalkeeper Nicco Roque made two saves.

The Purple Knights outshot the Hawks, 14-7, including 7-2 in the opening half, and also held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 5 at noon when they play host to Adelphi University at Melucci Field.
