MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Ian Theriault (Merrimack, N.H.) scored a goal and added an assist, while senior Drew Cooper (Portland, Conn.) added the second goal, as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team blanked Assumption College, 2-0, Saturday afternoon for Northeast-10 men's soccer action.
With the Hawk win, both teams now stand at 2-1 overall, while Saint Anselm jumps out to 1-0- in the league and the Greyhounds begin their conference record at 0-1.
Saint Anselm jumped on the board in the 15th minute when Theriault picked up a Brian Ayers (North Potomac, Md.), cross and buried the ball into the back of the net. Ayers snagged a pass from the midfield, and dribbled into the far right corner of the box, before crossing the ball to Theriault at the far post, who struck for the 1-0 lead.
With 13:40 remaining in the half, sophomore Colin Mahoney (Peabody, Mass.) attempted to set up the Hawk offense with a cross from the left, but the pass was blocked by an Assumption defender.
The Hawks doubled their lead at 59:17 when Cooper ran on a short pass from Theriault and fired the ball past Assumption goalkeeper Dana King's left side.
Saint Anselm had a few chances to add a third tally late in the second half, first when freshman Matthew Vlasich (Exeter, N.H.) sent the ball high with 21 minutes remaining and then again when Mahoney shot high with 15:38 remaining in the game.
The Greyhounds had their best chance with 18:17 to play as Josh Dutilley forced Saint Anselm goalkeeper Mark Kotsopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to make a diving save.
Kotsopoulos made five saves, while King stopped two of four shots on net. The Hawks held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Hawks return to the field Tuesday, Sept. 17 as they play host to Stonehill College in a 4 p.m. tilt on Melucci Field.
