Baseball Pounds Out 32 Hits in Sweep of Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) homered and drove in four runs, senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) homered and drove in three and freshmen Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) and Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.) each turned in quality starts as the Saint Anselm College baseball team earned a pair of wins against Assumption College on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Park. The Hawks pounded out 19 hits in a 12-4 win in the first game before holding off the Greyhounds in a 7-5 game two victory.

The Hawks improve to 12-16-1 on the season, including 7-6 in Northeast-10 play, while the Greyhounds drop to 7-19, 2-9 NE-10.

The Hawks went up 2-0 in the third inning of game one when Hayden crushed an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left-center to score senior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.), who singled through the left side to lead off the frame.

An RBI single from freshman Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) in the fourth made it 3-0 before the Hawks blew it open the next two innings. After Billy Johnson's RBI double to right cut it to 3-1, Hayden led off the fifth with a double to the gap in left-center, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single to center by senior Rett Ostafin (Port St. Lucie, Fla.). Ostafin then stole second and later scored on a pinch-hit single to center by freshman Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Sophomore Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.), who walked, moved to third and scored when Morrisino swiped second and the throw went down. Morrisino moved to third on McQuarrie's single up the middle and scored when the centerfielder misplayed the ball to cap the four-run inning.

Saint Anselm extended its lead to 10-1 in the sixth when Kelly led off with a double to center before Hayden swatted his second dinger of the day to left. Junior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) followed with an opposite-field shot to left to make it-back-to-back homers for the Hawks.

Kelly's sacrifice fly to center in the seventh opened the lead to 10 before Assumption pushed a pair across in the eighth on two wild pitches. The Hawks made it 12-3 in the bottom of the inning on Morrisino's RBI single to left-center. Assumption tacked on a run in the ninth on a sac fly from Tomas Paine.

Hudon (2-1) pitched the first 7.0 innings and allowed a run on five hits, while striking out five and walking three. Junior Matt Wojichowski (Portsmouth, R.I.) was charged with three runs on two hits and four walks over one-plus inning of work, while freshman Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) came in to the game in the ninth and recorded three straight outs.

Hayden was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. McQuarrie was also 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Morrisino went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run. Junior Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) was 2-for-2 and Manzi went 2-for-5 and scored a run.

Saint Anselm again drew first blood in game two as Morin led off the third inning with a single, stole second and went to third when the throw went into center and scored on a sac fly by freshman Tom Murphy (Chelmsford, Mass.).

The Hawks posted a four-run sixth inning on a two-run homer to center by Kelly and a two-run triple to right-center by Morin. Single runs for Assumption in the seventh and eighth innings sliced the lead to 5-2, but Saint Anselm scored two more in the bottom of the eighth when Murphy scored on a wild pitch and Kelly singled to right-center to make it 7-2.

The Greyhounds plated three runs in the ninth and had the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs, but Walsh induced a grounder to short to end the game.

Trabucco (1-1) allowed a run on six hits, while striking out four and walking one over seven innings. Freshman Clayton Welch (Manchester, N.H.) gave up a run on four hits in 0.1 innings, while senior William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) was charged with three runs on three hits and a walk in 0.2-plus innings. Walsh earned his first save with a hitless inning of work, walking one.

Morin was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run, while Manzi was 3-for-4 and scored once. Kelly (3 RBI, R) and Lagasse (R) each went 2-for-4.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to Saint Michael's College at Sullivan.
