Baseball Rolls to 8-2 Victory Against Saint Michael's

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) allowed one earned run over six innings and senior Rett Ostafin (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) collected three RBI to lead the Saint Anselm College baseball team past Saint Michael's College, 8-2, Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Park.

The Hawks win for the fifth time in their last six games, including their fourth straight, to improve to 13-16-1 on the season and 2-4 in the Northeast-10 Northeast Division. The Purple Knights dip to 7-17, 0-6 NE-10 NE.

After Saint Anselm loaded the bases to lead off the bottom of the first, a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of sophomore Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) produced the game's first run. Junior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) was then hit with a pitch to load the bases again before Ostafin was drilled with a pitch to make it 2-0. Sophomore Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) then drew a walk and the lead was three right off the bat.

Sac flies from senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) and Ostafin plated a pair in the second to make it 5-0.

Saint Michael's pushed across an unearned run in the fourth to chip away at the lead, but the Hawks grabbed two more in the fifth when freshman Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) scored on a balk and junior Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) came home on a Kelly groundout to first to make it 7-1.

The Purple Knights added another run in the sixth on Jacob Begnoche's RBI double to center, but the Hawks matched it with Ostafin's RBI groundout in the eighth.

Brian (1-1) allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits and five walks, while striking out three over 6.0 innings. Freshman Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) walked one and hit a batter in his brief appearance, while classmate Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass.) tossed three scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out a pair for his first save.

Senior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, while Lluberes went 2-for-3 and scored three times. Hayden (RBI), Lagasse (R) and McQuarrie (R) were all 1-for-3.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 10 at 3:30 p.m. when they hit the road to take on Saint Michael's. The next home game for the Hawks is Saturday, April 20 when they play host to Merrimack College in doubleheader action beginning at noon at Sullivan Park.
