Franklin Pierce Rallies Past Baseball, 7-3

RINDGE, N.H. – Sophomore Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to stake the Saint Anselm College baseball team to an early lead, but Franklin Pierce University scored six runs in its final two times at bat to steal a 7-3 victory at Pappas Field on Tuesday evening.

The Hawks drop to 15-20-1 on the season, including 10-10 in Northeast-10 play and 4-8 in the Northeast Division. The Ravens, meanwhile, improve to 24-12, 14-3 NE-10, 7-3 NE-10 NE.

Following a one-out single in the fourth by senior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) and a double from classmate Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.), Hayden turned on a 1-1 pitch and blasted it over the left field fence to put Saint Anselm on top, 3-0.

The Ravens finally reached senior starter James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) in the sixth when Justin Brock hit a leadoff single to center, stole second, moved to third on a Calvin Graves groundout and scored when Dan Kemp struck out swinging, but needed to be thrown out at first.

Franklin Pierce carried that momentum into the seventh when it posted three runs – highlighted by RBI singles from John Razzino and Matthew O'Herron. The Ravens kept it going in the eighth as Zach Mathieu greeted Farrington with a solo shot to center that made it 5-3. Razzino added a two-run homer later in the inning off senior William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) to provide even more cushion.

Farrington (2-6) allowed five runs on eight hits, while striking out a pair and walking none over 7.0-plus innings. O'Connor was charged with two runs on a hit in 1.0 inning.

Hayden was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Manzi and Kelly were each 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Trevor Graham improved to 5-1 for the Ravens as he gave up three runs on four hits, while striking out five and walking one over 7.0 innings.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 17 at 3:30 p.m. when they head north to take on Division I foe Dartmouth College. The next home game for the Hawks is Saturday, April 20 when they play host to Merrimack College in doubleheader action that begins at noon at Sullivan Park.
