LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) drove in four runs to back the quality start from junior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.), as the Saint Anselm College baseball team posted a 6-3 victory against the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.
The Hawks, who split with UMass Lowell on Saturday, improve to 15-19-1 on the season, including 4-7 in Northeast-10 Northeast Division play. The River Hawks drop to 19-14-1, 2-5-1 NE-10 NE.
UMass Lowell jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Brian in the bottom of the first on an RBI triple to right-center by James Katsiroubas and a run-scoring single from Pat Devlin. The River Hawks then added another in the second to open the lead to three when Joe Consolmango stroked an RBI triple to right-center.
Saint Anselm scraped up a run in the top of the third when senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) led off with a single to right, moved to second and then third on a pair of wild pitches and crossed the plate when Hayden drove a sacrifice fly to foul territory in right field.
The River Hawks looked to be heading for victory, but the Saint Anselm bats came alive in the eighth behind a two-run double to left from Hayden and a two-run triple to right-center by junior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) that put the Hawks in front, 5-3.
Hayden helped the Hawks pad their lead in the ninth and made UML pay for an intentional walk in front of him. With runners at second and third and one out in the inning, the River Hawks issued an intentional walk to Kelly to get to Hayden, who promptly delivered a single to left to make it 6-3.
Freshman Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.), who entered with a runner on first and no one out in the eighth and quickly induced a fly out and a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning, retired three of the four batters he faced in the ninth for his team-leading third save.
Brian (2-1) worked the first seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking three. Trabucco tossed the two scoreless frames and allowed just a hit.
Kelly (2 R) went 2-for-3, while Hayden (4 RBI, R) was 2-for-4.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, April 16 at 6 p.m. when they take on Franklin Pierce University. The next home game for the Hawks is Saturday, April 20 when they play host to Merrimack College in doubleheader action that begins at noon at Sullivan Park.
