Baseball's Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short In 9-6 Loss At Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) homered and drove in three runs, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision to Eckerd College on Wednesday evening at the Turley Complex, despite having the bases loaded with no one out in the ninth.

The Hawks sink to 2-7-1 on the season, while the Tritons improve to 10-7.

Eckerd jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second when Jake O'Rourke hit an RBI single, Shane Bishop reached Saint Anselm starter, sophomore Ryan Cosmopulos (Seekonk, Mass.), for a two-run homer and Rowdy Andrews drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Two more runs in the third made it 6-0.

Saint Anselm cut its deficit in half with three in the fourth on a trio of bases-loaded walks. The Tritons hit back with two more in the bottom half of the inning to make it 8-3, however.

In the seventh, after freshman Alan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) walked and classmate Jack Hopkins (Brandywine, Md.) was hit by a pitch, Kelly slammed a Richard Cruz-Sanchez offering over the right field fence to trim the Eckerd lead to 8-6.

Keegan Oberer's RBI double to right-center in the eighth tacked on an insurance run that brought the score to 9-6.

Then in the ninth, McQuarrie led off the inning by reaching on an error and then moved to third on a Hopkins double. Senior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) walked to pack the bases with nobody out, but Jared Habershaw struck out the Hawks' No. 3, 4 and 5 hitters in order to end the game.

Kelly's 2-for-5 performance and Hopkins' 1-for-4 day accounted for all three Saint Anselm hits.

Cosmopulos allowed eight runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out one over 3.1 innings. Freshman Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) gave up just a run on one hit and struck out nine and walked one in 4.2 innings of relief.

The Hawks return to action Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. as they take on Saint Leo University.
