Saint Leo Rallies Past Baseball, 5-3

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Junior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in a pair of runs, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team was clipped by Saint Leo University, 5-3, Thursday evening at Southard Stadium.

The Hawks fall to 2-8-1 on the season, while the Lions improve to 13-6.

Saint Anselm leapt out to a 2-0 in the top of the first. The Hawks pushed their first run across when freshman Jack Hopkins (Brandywine, Md.) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.), moved to third on a single through the right side by senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) and scored on an RBI groundout to third by sophomore Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.). Lagasse followed with a single up the middle to drive in Kelly and stake the Hawks to a two-run lead.

Saint Leo cut its deficit in half in the second when Taylor Perez doubled down the right field line, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Daniel Torres' single to center.

Lagasse knocked in Kelly again in the third to give the Hawks their two-run cushion back. Kelly led off the frame with a double to right-center and then came around to score when Lagasse doubled to the opposite gap.

The Lions tied the game in fourth on a sac fly by Torres and a Bobby Twitty single up the middle. Saint Leo then grabbed the lead in the fifth when Cole Stancil's RBI groundout to short drove in Chris Newcomb, who tripled to left-center in the previous at bat to lead off the inning.

Newcomb started things again in the seventh, singling through the left side and swiping second before Perez plated him with a single up the middle that made it 5-3.

Lagasse and Kelly were each 2-for-4, while Lagasse racked up two RBI and Kelly scored a pair of runs.

Senior James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) started and went the first 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits, while striking out five and walking three. Freshman Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) tossed 1.2 hitless innings, walking one and striking out one.

The Hawks return to action Friday, March 8 at 6 p.m. as they wrap up their two-game set at Saint Leo.
