MANCHESTER, N.H. - Freshman Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, Calif.) locked down 13 kills, while senior Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.) tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs, but the Saint Anselm College volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Adelphi University on Friday evening for Northeast-10 volleyball action in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Saint Anselm fell just short of the win and will drop to 6-13 overall and 1-5 in the NE-10, while the Panthers bump to 14-8 overall with a 6-1 mark in the league.
Adelphi took advantage of their powerful offense, hitting .375 in the first set to take game one by a score of 25-20. The Hawks battled back, however, to even the score 1-1 and capture the second set, 26-24. The third set went to the Hawks, who recorded 12 kills, including four each from Gladwill and sophomore Lauren Oxley (Bristow, Va.). Adelphi forced the fifth set as they snatched the fourth, 25-21.
In the fifth set, the Hawks and Panthers traded points until Gustavson took over the service and went on a four-point run that included two service aces to break it open at 14-9. The Panthers turned the tables, however, pushed the game into extra points and eventually took the fifth set, 17-15, taking advantage of three kills from Shelby Stoner.
Oxley totaled eight kills for a match-high .600 hitting percentage. Junior Melissa Ouellet (Salem, N.H.) added six kills and five blocks, while classmate Holland McNabb (Huntington Beach, Calif.) contributed seven kills and five digs.
Gladwill led the serving effort with a match-high five service aces as the team racked up 13 as a whole, compared to just two from Adelphi. Junior Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) picked up 42 assists, 13 digs and a pair of kills.
The Hawks drew a defensive effort across the board with seven different players chipping in four or more digs. Junior Jenny Doder (St. Louis, Mo.), and freshman CC Chrisom (Dover, N.H.), added seven and four, respectively.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Pace and host their "Dig Pink" initiative through the Side-Out Foundation.
