MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Kendra Bonczar (Milford, N.H.) scored in the 95th minute to lead the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory against crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday afternoon for Northeast-10 women's soccer action on Melucci Field.
With the win, Saint Anselm jumps to 6-6-2 overall with a 5-5-1 mark in the NE-10, while the Penmen will fall to 7-5-3, 4-4-3 NE-10.
Bonczar lifted Saint Anselm to victory as she picked up a pass from senior Emma Furlone (Keene, N.H.) and pushed the ball past Southern New Hampshire goalkeeper Samantha Whittier's left side. Furlone initiated the sequence with a through ball down the left side to Bonczar, just outside the box and she sent the ball past a pulled out Whittier.
The Hawks had a pair of chances to score in the first half, with attempts from Bonczar and junior Alexa Lucci (Hope, R.I.). At 26:55, sophomore Taylor Levy (Norton, Mass.) sent a through ball up the field, which Bonczar tracked down and kicked into a diving Whittier. Sophomore Callie Millet (Lancaster, Mass.) began the second chance when she slid a pass to Lucci, on the left, who sent the ball just outside the near post.
Saint Anselm freshman goalie Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) and Whittier each made four saves. Quattropani improves to 3-1-0 on the season with the win. Despite the loss, the Penmen held the 14-10 shot advantage.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. when they travel to Assumption College. Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter @STAHawks.
