Men's Soccer Clipped by Merrimack, 2-1

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Freshman Zachary Heckt (So. Windsor, Conn.) scored in the 88th minute, but it was not enough as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team dropped Tuesday night's 2-1 decision to Merrimack College at Martone-Mejail Field.

The Hawks dip to 2-10 on the season, including 1-9 in Northeast-10 play, while the Warriors up their record to 11-3, 9-2 NE-10.

Merrimack drew first blood midway through the 32nd minute when Ronald Ried converted a penalty kick by beating senior goalkeeper Mark Kotsopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to make it 1-0.

The match would stay that way into the second half until the Warriors scored off a corner kick in the 72nd minute. Ryan Miller served the ball into the box where Daniel Holland headed it to Alexander Alleyne, who volleyed it into the left side of the net to stretch the lead to two.

Saint Anselm jumped on the board with 2:15 remaining in regulation when senior George Lamptey (Worcester, Mass.) sent a long feed down the right side to Heckt, who beat Merrimack goalkeeper Jose Silva into the left side.

Kotsopoulos made eight saves, while Silva stopped three shots.

Merrimack held large advantages in both shots (27-7) and corner kicks (8-0).

The Hawks return to action Thursday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. when they travel to take on Mercy College. The next home game for the Hawks is Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. when they play host to the College of Saint Rose on Senior Day at Melucci Field.
